When it comes to choosing between French doors and sliding doors for your home, the decision is more than just aesthetic-each option brings its advantages. Whether you’re considering a stylish upgrade or focusing on long-term maintenance, this guide will help you make the best choice for your door installation.

When it came time to finish the basement, we knew we would have to replace the eternally broken sliding glass doors. Since there is no patio or covering (yet), grass was forever gumming up the exterior door track and we could barely open them. It had actually always been that way, and I was tired of it.
From the elegant wood French patio doors in my parent’s craftsman wood cabin to a bevy of types of doors in apartments, I have lived with both French and sliding patio doors in a variety of homes.
Now, as we replace the glass patio doors with French patio doors in the basement finishing project, I've found myself weighing the unique pros and cons of each option all over again. So, in addition to sharing the progress on the basement, I hope this may help you make an informed decision for your own home.
Cost
- Initial Investment: French doors are often more expensive due to the additional mechanisms and craftsmanship of materials.
- Installation Costs: Sliding doors are typically easier and quicker to install, which may save on labor costs compared to the more complex installation of French doors. Aligning the framing perfectly with shims is a bit of a pain for French doors.
- Long-Term Costs: Long-term maintenance, such as repairs to hinges, locks, or the sliding track has costs. as well as potential energy savings from better-insulated doors.
Material Options
Wood vs. Vinyl vs. Aluminum: French doors are often crafted in wood, but they can also be found in fiberglass or aluminum. Glass sliding patio doors are more commonly made from vinyl or aluminum. Each material affects the look, cost, and longevity.
Consider your climate and exposure to the elements. Cheaper vinyl and wood materials can warp or rot without proper maintenance, while aluminum is more weather-resistant.
I always recommend checking out the longevity of warranties and personal experiences of those who have lived with similar doors.
Weather Exposure
If the door is exposed to direct sunlight, strong winds, or rain, the material and seal quality will be important to ensure durability. Sliding doors often perform better in extreme weather due to their tight seal, but modern French doors with advanced seals can be equally effective.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Each Type
When deciding between French doors and sliding doors, here are some pros and cons to consider:

French Doors
Advantages:
- Better Aesthetics: French doors bring a luxurious, elegant classic look that can enhance the style of a home, often creating a grand entryway that can appeal to new buyers.
- Open Space: Some styles have it so that both side-by-side doors can open fully, which makes for better ventilation if needed and will more easily accommodate large items like furniture going through the doors.
- Customization: Available in various styles, colors, and materials, French doors have more design options. You can get blinds between glass panes for increased privacy, for example, or add storm doors.
Disadvantages:
- Space Requirements: French doors require more floor space to swing open, making them less ideal for smaller rooms or tight spaces.
- Energy Efficiency: There are more mechanisms to wear out, such as the insulation seals under and around French doors. While properly sealed and insulated French doors are often more energy-efficient than sliding doors, these seals may need to be replaced to keep that efficiency.
- Mechanical maintenance: The hinges and seals on French doors require more frequent maintenance to prevent wear and tear, but it’s not a lot.
- Security: You generally have to buy your own lock set. I would recommend a set of doors with multiple lock points for securing both doors from the inside.
What can go wrong? The biggest pain that I have seen with French doors is that they can fall out of alignment over time and the doors may rub against one another or become stuck when opening. Fluctuating temperatures can also cause misalignment in construction materials that expand or contract over seasons.

Sliding Doors
Advantages:
- Space-Saving Design: Sliding doors don't require any clearance to open, making them ideal for smaller rooms or areas with limited space.
- Uninterrupted View: Sliding doors often offer larger glass panels, providing unobstructed views of the outdoors and maximizing natural light.
- Low Maintenance: With fewer moving parts, they usually require less mechanical maintenance. However, cleaning and oiling of the tracks is much more frequent.
- Dog Doors: We have this dog door insert in our kitchen sliding door (pictured above) for our 75lb dog. We could not do this in a set of French doors.
Disadvantages:
- Half the Open Space: With sliding doors, only one side will ever be able to open which limits the amount of space for things like ventilation or moving large furniture through.
- Track Maintenance: The sliding mechanism usually requires occasional cleaning and adding grease to ensure smooth operation. I have seen cheaper varieties warp in the door frame and cause problems with operating.
- Aesthetic Flexibility: Sliding doors can sometimes feel more modern and may not complement traditional or rustic home designs.
- Security: Sliding doors can be vulnerable if the locking system isn't secure, though newer models have more advanced locking options.
Weighing these factors will help you determine which door style best fits your needs for style, function, and space. For us now, we have a lot more to go on the basement, but it’s really taking shape now!
