Step into the Upside Down with this DIY Stranger Things portal on your garage door opening. This is one from my own imagination that I plan on doing next year. Full disclosure – I started with an AI image to understand how I wanted this to look.
How to Set Up a Stranger Things Portal:
- Measure the opening of your garage door, add 6-8 in. on each side for framing.
- Build a frame using 2×2 treated lumber (or PVC if you prefer lightweight).
- Attach a translucent sheet over the of the frame and glue or staple gun.
- Drape black garbage bags over the frame and any gaps in the sheeting and attach with a staple gun. Attach so that the sheet section is circular in shape.
- Add lighting: place a red floodlight several feet back from the rear of the sheet shining through it. It’s even better if you can get the light to pulse in brightness slowly.
- Add sticks and braches around the exterior and weave in more trash bags as necessary to create the effect. Keep in mind how this looks in the dark as you work.
- Anchor into ground or wall with brackets or stakes, especially if you expect wind.

FAQs
For durability, PVC pipe, treated lumber, and metal rods make strong frames. Foam board, chicken wire, spray foam, and pool noodles are lightweight options for shaping. Always use outdoor-rated paints or fabrics to protect against rain.
Anchor your decorations with stakes, sandbags, or rebar driven into the ground. For freestanding props, add weight to the base with concrete blocks or buckets filled with gravel. Always test stability before a stormy night.
Disassemble pieces, when possible, to save space. Store flat panels upright against a wall and use breathable covers to avoid mold. If you build with PVC or wood frames, label pieces for easy reassembly next year. I have a neighbor who rents a small air-controlled storage unit for his enormous collection.
Start with simple builds like giant yard spider above, oversized tombstones from foam insulation boards, or tomato cage ghosts. These projects are budget-friendly and easy to scale up.
