20 Craft Room storage and organization ideas that will inspire! Create a customized organization system that works for you; you’ll be amazed at how quickly new habits are formed! These budget-friendly DIYs are perfect for small spaces and organizing odds & ends.

My standard operating procedure is to leave a project out until it’s finished and that can get a tad messy. Keeping that in mind, our dream craft room makeover (seen here) incorporated extra organization elements into its design.
And today, I am sharing all the inspirational design tips and smart ideas I used to create my own office organization systems. Get ready to transform your space with the best, most functional storage options and let your creativity shine without chaos!
My Desired Elements
As I said, I built my own office, so I knew all of the criteria that I would need to pack into a tiny space. These included:
- Shelving Unit with wall-mounted shelves to maximize vertical space.
- Area for kids (and me!) to draw and display artwork
- Easy to keep organized.
- Must be light and bright without being overwhelming,
- Room to grow.
- Computer station & work space.
- Budget Friendly and under $1000.
- Inspirational for more crafting ideas.

Pegboards for Organization
Pegboards are perfect for custom craft room storage to hang tools, scissors, rulers, and other frequently used items.

Small tools are within easy reach in this workspace upgrade. I love the little touches, like the picture frames with motivational quotes and potted plants.

And how about the genius way to store rolls of vinyl?! Clean, simple, and full of fun! These pegboard organizers blend both functional storage and design.

And here is my very own! The cups are ideal for sorting pens, markers, glue, and tape. How To Hang a Pegboard
Craft Room Wall Storage
Alas, like most avid crafters, hanging a pegboard isn’t nearly enough storage for my cache of supplies.

So, we built our very own version of this rustic style storage display. These wall cubicles are a neat way to display ribbons, paint bottles, stamp pads, glitter, and other colorful items.
Over the Door Organizers

I also love this idea of this medicine cabinet that tucks behind a door. I would use it in tighter corners, so I can leave it open and not hitting the door itself constantly.
Or Hang organizers on the back of doors to store smaller items like paints, brushes, and markers. I have seen organizers similar to our linen closet makeover used in this way.
More Wall Storage Ideas:
- Wall mounted file folders hold future plans, current projects, and help me stay on track.
- Hanging fabric storage baskets
- Clipboards and scratch paper mounted on the wall
- Wall shelves with labeled bins
Art Project Display

This can be used to display new crafts or sometimes items waiting to dry or work on again. I sometimes use it for him and myself as a corkboard with memories and notes.
Photography Boards
Much like the artwork display, you can use photographs or printed quotes as inspiration for your projects and progress. Here are some similar ideas that we considered:

Oversized Photo Holders – Includes 25 clips and mounting hardware to make it so easy to hang! I have also seen cork boards used in much the same way.
Personalized Sign with Clothespins – The clothespins are actually glued to the surface here rather than hung by string, which means the string won’t bend. The sting in the photo is only decorative.
White Clamp Style – Powerful magnets secure the artwork between the two wooden slats, which separate easily to allow for a frequent rotation of their latest and greatest creations.
Steel Rod Hanging Apparatus – I love the options of using the hanging clips, which cascade down or you can buy multiple rods. The wire cable can support 30 LBS too!
Craft Room Display Shelves
Shelving is key to keeping items organized and convenient. A good shelving unit also serves as a showcase display. Your shelving unit can be as simple as some IKEA bookcases grouped along a wall or as sophisticated as built-ins.

Using antique suitcases and rustic crates adds decorative flair and functional storage to a traditional bookcase.

The rolling crate display shelf includes plans for building it. The simple crates are easy to label and store items by category.
Under Table Storage

This green craft room inspires me on so many levels. From the flat file cabinet (also known as a Hamilton type or printer’s cabinet) to the worktable with storage. It’s sleek, clean, and simply perfect for storing paper, markers, flat tools or utensils.
Using the space under your worktable for storage bins or a small set of drawers to keep supplies close at hand. Just be sure to account for room for your chair/yourself on your chair while you work.
Repurposed Furniture

In my own office, I repurposed our old kitchen countertops and painted a set of used kitchen cabinets. However, this idea to repurpose a dining hutch into a craft cupboard is a beautiful way to exhibit supplies while keeping them well-ordered.
Craft Closet
I completely understand that some of us aren’t lucky enough to have a dedicated room. I do love the clever idea of converting an unused closet into a craft room or at least making stunning storage like Laura did above. All the heart eyes!!!!
Folding Container Unit

I think if the idea of making your own custom office organizers seems daunting, then you may want to consider a fold away cabinet like the Dreambox pictured above. It’s Always Autumn has an in-depth review and shows how it all packs neatly way with the close of a few doors.
Desktop Organizers: Tidy your work surface with desktop organizers for pens, pencils, and other small tools. I have included loads of DIY Desk Organizers Ideas in this post.
Drawer Dividers
Ok, these do have a special place in my heart because I treat my junk drawer like a treasure hunt – you never know what you will find that you forgot!

How about making your own drawer organizers?! From a window display, The House of Wood took note of the streamlined cooking utensil display. The result? These brilliantly flexible drawer dividers.
Some common ways to use them include storing pens and other frequently used items. You could also use them as a place to store everything you need for your current scrapbooking project!
More Craft Room Storage Ideas
And here are some of my all-time favorite craft room organization ideas for small bits and craft supplies:

- Get this 3-tier unit here from a post on workspace organization
- Thread Organizer that you can frame on the wall
- Glitter Glue Storage
- Embellishment Tackle Box
- Markers in Apothecary Jars (love these jars)
- Craft Supplies in Mason Jars
- Storing Ribbon on Clothespins
- Craft Paint in IKEA buckets – I’m not sure if IKEA has these buckets still, but you can use a window box and hangers like these a similar effect.
- Craft Supply Carts

I live alone in a small apartment, so I can’t nail or screw anything into the walls, like a pegboard. I have been using free standing sturdy shelves with plastic drawers placed on them. I had been stacking plastic containers on the shelves, but that made the materials in the bottom boxes difficult to access, so I’m in the process of switching over to drawers.
One problem I have is that the corner I use for storing stuff has baseboard heat on one wall. I’ve had plastic storage melt because of this, so now I just put things on the upper shelves and leave the space near the heat empty.
My craft storage area is a work in progress. I’d like to cover the shelves with some kind of curtains to make my apartment have less visual clutter. I love the apothecary jars you use for storage; I’d like to try that. I often use vintage cookie tins, especially rectangular ones, to store stuff in.

I put baskets in my shelves to contain the clutter, but I love your idea of curtains.

This room ideas are actually great and impressive. We should try this in our room.

I love this post! I just had the floors in my house redone and it was a grand excuse to reorganize my craft room. I used many of the same ideas. The cute little carts that are $79 at Amazon are only $30 at Container Store. I use two: one for paint supplies and one for sewing supplies. Wish I could share pictures!

I love looking at craft ideas, whether it’s gifts or rooms. At our present house I thought I’d have a craft room in our pass through bedroom, but it didn’t last long. It became a dumping area. We bought a house up in central Wisconsin and I plan on having my craft room in a section of our basement. There’s already a pegboard there that I plan on painting white to make it stand out. My husband will be hanging some florescent lights (the ones that are in my present ‘craft room’ because there’s only one bulb in there right now and you have to screw it in to light it. I hope to get back to my crafting once we’re settled and finishing all the craft projects I started plus some new ones. I’m retired now so I’ll have lots of time to concentrate on having fun and hopefully being creative.

Sounds like you have your work cut out for you, but I do hope you can get back to crafting again soon. It’s such a fun hobby and so useful. Having a dedicated space feels amazing and so organized, but I totally understand it becoming a dumping ground. My family tries hard to do that to me too, lol, but I’ve developed a few strategies to keep it at bay, such as not buying items without a specific project in mind (so hard!) and having a “reset” day where I basically declutter and clean and get the small projects out of the way before I can start any new ones. Very therapeutic! Best of luck on your new space and I hope you love it!

That’s funny! I almost have the same Pegboards and I love it.

This is great, I’m currently creating my new art studio and envision it as cleverly crafty as what you have pictured.
Rachel says
Thank you for the kind words! Having a dedicated space to be artistic and creative is about the best thing ever. I bet your space will be beautiful and functional when it is finished and I would love to see it!

Good luck!!!! You know you can use those wood crates for files? they fit perfectly! I just made some for my office 🙂 Thanks for linking up to Feature Friday!

That’s a cool idea! I will have to keep that in mind when we get everything back into the office and I have to sort it all out. We pulled all the cabinets out this weekend to paint them in the basement. It’s a huge mess, haha!

My craft room is my sunroom so I have plenty of light but its a shared space. I had it almost completely how I wanted it to share and then we started homeschooling and I had to adjust ALOT!! Also my dogs’ kennels are in there so they have their area and my husband has a corner with tools in it. I have some pegboard, lots of shelving, baskets and I love glass jars for storing. Hopefully I can get it in order once school is out and share it because we are planning to put our house on the market in a few months.

I love common areas like that where eveyone has their own station and can work on their own thing. Keeps everyone close. Good luck with the house move!

Some great craft room ideas. I’m slowing taking over our study and it has really become my craft room. Hubby’s pretty good though he actually made me a gorgeous thread holder for Christmas and bought me lots of threads to fill it up.
I love peg boards. I have bought myself little hooks and things to use on one but not got around to doing one yet 😉

You have me dreaming of the peg board that I plan to put in my office whenever I can get the hubby to help me! Great pics!
