    • Recipe: Blueberry Margaritas

Indulge in the comfort of Mexican food with a twist: a refreshing blueberry margarita! Diving into a plate of blackened fish tacos or crispy pork carnitas topped with a dollop of fresh avocado crema, tastes like vacation on a plate.

Much like my pool party favorite, Watermelon Margaritas, this recipe is a summery take on the classic, with sweet blueberries lending a beautiful, bold hue. Summer makes me giddy with anticipation thinking of all of those ripe, juicy berries ready for snacking and cooking- muffins, salads, margaritas, oh my!

Skip the premade mix and opt for simple, fresh ingredients like plump blueberries, lime juice, tequila, orange liqueur, and a touch of simple syrup. Get ready to savor the clean flavors of this delightful concoction.

    Ingredients and Equipment

Ingredients to make a blueberry margarita with tequila, triple sec, blueberries, and lime juice.
    • Blueberries. - Fresh or frozen blueberries work equally well.
    • Tequila - I would recommend a medium level tequila brand. Gold or Blanco tequila is fine, but don’t waste an aged Anejo (dark tequila) on a mixed cocktail.
    • Orange Liqueur - Triple sec or Cointreau add a subtleness to the classic margarita taste without detracting.
    • Lime Juice - I use fresh lime juice which has less sugar, but Rose's Lime Juice or even margarita mix works for speed.
    • Sweetener (optional) - The necessity of a sweetener is dependent on personal tastes. Agave Nectar or Simple Syrup are perfect.
    • Turbinado Sugar or Salt Rimmer - Although there is a specific rimming salt, most coarse salts will do (Himalayan is really pretty). For a sugar rim, you can use turbinado sugar or colored crystal sugar from the baking aisle.

    Recommended Equipment

Blender: A high-powered blender is essential for blending the ingredients to a smooth and icy consistency. You’ll need crushed ice to achieve the desired frozen consistency. You can, however, shake and stir the blueberry puree with well-crushed ice.

Jigger: A jigger or measuring tool is handy for accurately measuring the amounts of liquor.

Citrus Juicer: A citrus juicer or reamer is useful for extracting fresh lime juice, which adds a tangy and refreshing element to the margarita.

Long-Handled Spoon or Stirrer: A long-handled spoon or stirrer can help mix the ingredients in the blender and assist in serving the margaritas.

    Quick Tips

How To Measure Alcohol: When I worked as a bartender, we used a jigger or a 4-count free pour technique (4 count = 1oz) with a pour spout. At home, if you don't have a jigger, 1oz equals 2 tbsp.

How To Make a Blueberry Margarita for One: 2oz Tequila (4 Tbsp), 0.5oz Triple Sec (1 Tbsp), 1tsp lime juice or 1 squeeze of a lime, ⅓ cup of blueberries and 1 cup of ice.

Because of the texture, I do not recommend serving this “on the rocks” or using a cocktail shaker. You could muddle fresh blueberries and strain the juice but that produces a lot more waste.

Keep your margarita glasses in the freezer until you are ready to serve. Cold beverages served in a cold glasses taste better, and they help the drink last slightly longer.

    Serving Suggestions

Elevate the visual appeal of this delicious drink with a special garnish and barware befitting the occasion. While you can’t go wrong with a traditional Margarita glass, a Martini or High Ball glass is a modern and sturdy option too.

    Garnish Suggestions:

    • Lime slice or wheel
    • Orange slice
    • Blueberry Cocktail Pick
    • Blueberry & Lime Wedge Skewer (alternate pattern)
    • Mint Leaves
    • Coarse Salt Rim
    • Colored Sugar Rim

    FAQs

Can I use frozen blueberries in this recipe?

Although the flavor is slightly fresher with fresh blueberries, frozen ones can be substituted.

Is it better to mix Cointreau or Triple Sec in a margarita?

Either works. Cointreau is a premium orange liqueur with refined notes of oak and vanilla. Triple Sec has a very straightforward orange essence, similar to orange vodka.
