4. Drywall Over the Ceiling
Drywalling the area is a good option. In fact, it’s the one we chose in our basement. With this option, your space mirrors the main ceiling. No big scary dungeon in sight. Take a peek at how we framed the drywall:

Light is well dispersed around this area. Drywall (according to our codes here in Virginia) framing must be less than 24 inches on the center for ceilings and uses 2x4s.
Pros:
- Inexpensive.
- Aesthetically pleasing.
- Pesky formations like bulkheads or drops are easier to work with.
- Lights can be easily configured.
- Can bear some weight for heavier light fixtures.
Cons:
- Very labor intensive. The sanding is killer on the arms.
- No access to plumbing, wiring, or hvac equipment.
- Framing may need to be added.
5. Coffered Ceilings with Hidden Access
Need access to the plumbing and ductwork but prefer the appearance of drywall? There’s a DIY coffered ceiling solution for that. Trim boards mimic attic access panels!

This is a beautiful alternative for those with power tools and a bit of DIY experience under your belt. Most importantly, the result is an elegant finish customized specifically for your space.
Pros:
- Beautiful with minimal loss to room height.
- Access to pipes, ductwork, etc.
- Allows for can lights to accommodate existing plumbing work.
