    • Recipe: Cake Batter Dip

This Funfetti Cake Batter dip is one of those recipes that can’t help but hit you in the whimsical nostalgic feels. Not to be confused with 90s kid staple, Dunkaroo dip, this recipe tastes more like creamy vanilla cake batter than sugary vanilla frosting. It is still quite sweet though!

Add to a dessert charcuterie board, your Spring Brunch menu, or birthday party playdate. Or serve it up during a rom com fest with a pitcher of Glitter Cranberry Punch for a girls’ night in. I don’t know if adults really outgrow our love for sprinkles.

    Why You’ll Love This Recipe

    • Easy 5-minute Dessert Dip. If you have 5 minutes, you can whip up this tasty funfetti dip. We’ve kept the ingredients simple, with easy ways to substitute, so you don’t have to run out to the grocery store. Win!
    • Make it from Scratch…or Not! It takes about the same amount of time whether you buy a boxed cake mix or measure out the ingredients minus the preservatives.
    • Delicious and Fun. The creamy vanilla dip pairs well with a variety of dippers including crunchy cookies and juicy berries. My favorite: Animal Crackers!
    • Party Perfect! Packed with vibrant sprinkles, this dessert dip is the perfect addition to a birthday bash or any joyous celebration. It will turn any frown upside down!

    Ingredients and Notes

Ingredients for cake batter dip laid out on a table with text label and dipper ideas.

Boxed Cake Mix or Make Your Own. Funfetti cake is at its core a vanilla flavored cake with colorful candy bits. Use the boxed cake mix or combine flour, sugar, and vanilla extract to make the same thing.

Cake Mix Tip: If you use a boxed mix (and I tested this), you can skip the sugar, flour, cornstarch, and vanilla. I’d still want more sprinkles. This substitution idea is why the boxed cake mix ingredients are in bright pink font in the photo above.

Cream Cheese - Philadelphia Cream Cheese is my go-to. Their reduced fat variety also works well. Make sure it is room temperature for optimal integration.

Whipped Cream – I use cool whip as a shortcut so I don’t have to chill my bowl, but feel free to make your own.

Vanilla Yogurt. I tried several recipes with heavy cream and frosting, but my experiment with regular vanilla yogurt worked best. The texture was creamier, and the vanilla flavor really edged this dip over the top of the other versions.

Sprinkles - I recommend round-style sprinkles for this recipe. I provided a few other options in the FAQ section below.

What to Dip in Funfetti Dip?

There are several great options that pair perfectly with this sweet dip.

    • Vanilla Wafers
    • Animal Crackers or Teddy Grahams
    • Graham Crackers
    • Pound Cake
    • Pretzels
    • Strawberries or Raspberries or other Fresh Fruit
    • Cookies or Brownies

    Recipe Tips

    • This recipe can be halved. I recommend using a hand or electric mixer in this case. A stand mixer will have trouble whipping such a small portion of cream cheese.
    • Do the smear test. It’s vital that the cream cheese is completely smooth and integrated with the whipped cream. After creaming, use a rubber spatula to spread some against the side of the bowl. If you see lumps in your smears, either the cream cheese wasn’t soft enough or you need to keep whipping.
    • Don’t use hard sprinkles. Use the circle confetti sprinkles or the long "jimmie" style sprinkles. Pearl sprinkles can be too hard on your teeth and unexpected.
    • Cake flour is better than all-purpose. True cake flour has less protein and gluten, which makes a softer, more delicate texture. All-purpose will have a slightly denser, biscuit dough-like texture. Either can be used in a pinch.
    • Heat-treat raw flour and boxed cake mix before eating uncooked. This is according to the CDC and in the instructions.

    Funfetti Cake Dip FAQs

Can this be made ahead of time?

Yes! The colorful sprinkles may bleed a bit so you may notice streaks of color when you dip. Store in an airtight container in the fridge until ready to use.

How do you store this dip?

Store any leftover dip in the refrigerator. Don’t leave out to room temperature for more than 2 hours because of the dairy components.

Is cake batter dip the same as dunkaroo dip?

No. Dunkaroos were a dipping snack in the 90s consisting of sugar cookies and chocolate or vanilla buttercream frosting with sprinkles. Although it may look similar, cake batter dip tastes more like creamy vanilla cake dough than frosting.

Is it safe to eat dry cake mix?

While I remember growing up eating raw cookie dough out of the bowl, it’s not considered safe by today’s standards. For more info, check out the CDC guidance on eating raw flour or cookie dough.

What type of sprinkles for Funfetti?

I recommend a soft sprinkle for this dip. Use the circle confetti sprinkles or the long "jimmie" style sprinkles. Try fun shapes for your next holiday celebration. I advise against any hard round or pearl type sprinkles. It’s not a fun surprise when you bite into a hard pearl while enjoying a soft dip.

    • 2 tablespoon Cornstarch
    • 1 cup Granulated Sugar
    • 1 tablespoon Vanilla Extract

    Dip Ingredients

    • 4 ounces Cream Cheese softened to room temperature

    Instructions

    • In a bowl, whisk together 2 tablespoon Cornstarch and 2 cups All-purpose Flour.
    • Raw flour must be heat treated before eating for food safety reasons. Heat your oven to 350℉ (177℃). Spread the flour mixture on a baking sheet and bake for about 5 minutes or until 160℉. Alternatively, you can put the flour in the microwave for 2-30 second intervals, stirring well between them and checking the temperature. Allow to cool completely.
    • Bring 4 ounces Cream Cheese to room temperature. In a large mixing bowl, use an electric mixer to cream together the cream cheese and 8 ounces Whipped Cream until smooth.
    • To the cream cheese mixture, add the cooled flour, 1 cup Granulated Sugar, 1 tablespoon Vanilla Extract, and half of the heavy cream. Mix, gradually adding in more cream until you've reached the desired texture for the dip. With a spoon, mix in the ½ cup Sprinkles.
    • Place in a serving bowl and top with extra sprinkles, if desired. Let the dip chill in the refrigerator for at least 20 minutes. Serve chilled dip with animal crackers or your favorite dippers.

    Recipe Notes

    *Boxed Mix Substitution
This recipe can be made either with a single box of vanilla cake mix or funfetti cake mix, or from scratch above. If you use a boxed mix, you can skip the sugar, flour, cornstarch, and vanilla but I would still want more sprinkles.
