We're in the middle of finishing our basement after the basement bathroom makeover, and of course, I couldn't resist adding some decorative wall paneling to bring in that cozy, Victorian charm. What kinds of molding options are there?

In other posts, we installed box trim step by step in our basement and showed how to avoid common mistakes with moulding. It also helps me illustrate trim definitions including door casement, wall paneling, baseboards, crown molding, and wall panels. We did not include a chair rail molding or buildup panels here, but there is a 6-inch shelf for drinks.
The point of this is that there are nearly unlimited design options and below are some different types and style ideas to get you started. Also, many link to step-by-step tutorials if something catches your eye!
Board and Batten Styles
“Board and batten” refers to a style of wall paneling where wide, flat wooden boards are laid, usually vertically, over wood panels or drywall in a box formation. If using wood panels, the battens cover the seams of the wood panels.

Should I buy a wall molding kit?
While it might be tempting to purchase a kit that promises no cuts and you can put up in a day, the reality is that only you know your project. A kit often is an expensive version that may end up with awkward spacing or endpoints unless it is custom cut. I feel like if you want to go the custom look route, you got to do the work.

Set a strong first impression with this easy paneled entryway design. This wall paneling design, featuring Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee, is proof that simple lines can be sensational. It also works brilliantly here with the craftsman doorways.

This traditional and elegant version is a DIY with wall paneling that elevates this home office. Decorative molding makes the interior wall panels appear recessed, which adds depth and character. The square design also reminds me of hidden panels which would be really fun.

This monochromatic board and batten provides a natural divide in this boho bedroom space. The lighter shade on the upper portion of the wall draws the eye upward, keeping interiors feeling open rather than enclosed. While this room showcases bold blue and green hues, even subtle color choices can create a striking impact.
Wainscotting

Wainscotting is a classic architectural statement and inexpensive way to customize your space. When we gave our blue powder room a makeover, we installed wainscotting to add simple sophistication. Premade panels don’t allow you to adjust size, so we opted to DIY our own. It’s a classic look on a budget for a small space.

The need for artwork is all but eliminated in this elegant dining room where the millwork of the two-toned walls are the focal point. Defying the traditional approach, the white paint acts as the accent color, bringing bold black accent wall drama that perfectly complements the room's elegant tones.
Modern Wall Paneling Ideas

This DIY modern accent wall tutorial is widely appealing with modern picture frame molding. Inspired by an image of a high-end foyer, this project solved the dilemma of an awkwardly shaped space for a grand total of $70. The picture in picture frames are eye catching without taking away from the other elements.

A bedroom suitable for a little girl that will still have some cool factor as she grows. They said goodbye to popcorn ceilings and installed a Parisian style wall treatment painted in Farrow & Ball's Peignoir. This soft, Parisian dream came to life by sticking to classic architectural details and finishes in blushes, buttercreams, and lavenders.

The delicate decorative corners add a little country charm to this bedroom. The little corner details blend perfectly with this cottage style bedroom. You can see a closeup of a similar corner molding here to inset into the sides.
Traditional Wall Moulding

If you don’t like the idea of mapping out the exact size of each box, this design makes it much simpler. I still recommend taping out rectangles on the wall with painter's tape to help visualize the design, but you won’t have to do as much math as using boxes all the same size.

You don’t have to do a whole wall to have an impact, either. I did this simple DIY box trim in our living room mantel. It adds a bit of texture to help frame larger focal points whether it’s a Christmas wreath, mirror, artwork, or oversized clock.

A DIY Molding Accent wall is an ideal way to layer in luxury without spending a lot of money. This trim design is a beautiful balance between classic and modern. You can save money without using boards between the trim, but it won’t have the same recessed look. The corner detailing like this is also a pretty change.

Like a traditional look with a little sparkle? This example has a thin piece of molding on the inside of the frames that is painted in metallic gold. It really up the lux factor along with the tufted headboard and gilded accent tables. I’d feel like a queen in here!

Geometric Moulding Ideas

Talk about a whole mood. This one-of-a-kind living room feature wall came together in stages. In order to stay on track with a project of this magnitude, create a vision board as your guide and use painter’s tape to visualize the concept. I love how the charcoal black Cyberspace by Sherwin Williams looks juxtaposed with the light wood slat wall and light wood floors.

Many people like to use a satin finish on moulding because it's easier to clean, but it will show more imperfections. The above pic is ultra traditional with smaller boxes on the bottom and larger boxes up top, but Pine and poplar’s contemporary trim tutorial shows an easier way with two stripes of moulding spanning the bottom of the wall.
